Tips & Info

Foreign Address individuals that are required to file a US tax return must file their returns by June 15 (not April 15). However if any tax is owing the payment must be paid on or by April 15.

Are you married and you must decide whether to file married filing separate or married filing joint? The tax advantage for a married couple filing joint is that the joint return is a combined return of two taxpayers, therefore if one spouse is earning a higher income and is in a higher tax bracket, by filing joint the incomes are added together and divided in half, so each tax payer has the same level of income. We all know that tax rates increase as the income bracket increases, dividing the total income between husband and wife results in a lower overall tax.

Tax changes in 2008 include:

a) an increased child tax credit of $600 per eligible child.
b) an increased deduction for student loan interest of up to $2,500.
c) an increase in the exemption for the alternative minimum tax of $2,000 for singles and $4,000 on a joint return.
d) a reduction in the tax rates above 15%.
e) a new 10% tax bracket that applies to the first $6,000 of taxable income for singles, $11,000 for heads of households, and $12,000 for joi
nt returns (other than dependants).
